  Surreal in Saudi
  M. Doreen

Fear strikes the heart of Claire when she learns her roommate is arrested and sits in a woman’s prison in the heart of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In the country for less than a week, Claire doesn’t know where to turn. Claire faces inconceivable atrocities, weaving her way through political and administrative hurdles, frantic to liberate her roommate from a horrifying fate.

Claire came to Saudi to fulfill a two-year contract as a nurse, hoping to delve into an international community, with the aspiration of acquiring deeper insight into medical practices within an international community. Her noble but naïve dreams are crushed when she discovers her colleagues are more interested in personal gain than seeking growth and expansion.

Claire is assigned to care for an infant and learns about duties, responsibilities and cultural practices within families and tribal relations. She is invited to participate in one of the primordial healing rituals. Appalled and reeling from shock and disgust, she is applauded by the protocol officers who are the go-betweens for the Westerners and the VIPs. Claire and a colleague are delegated and coerced to care for a Princess, one who comes from an elite lineage with connections to the ruling family.

Claire’s life is suddenly in turmoil. Far away from the protective walls of the hospital compound, facing insurmountable challenges and knowing Westerners have never crossed the threshold of this royal household, Claire fights for survival. Palace life unveils its secrets and when Claire unearths an embezzlement scheme, her life and the life of her colleague are in jeopardy.

Jealous and incensed servants plot against the two nurses, and one of the Princess’s sons lusts after Claire. Unaided and isolated, Claire doesn’t know her enemies. Her colleague is unhinged and about to crumble. How can Claire, a woman who cannot speak the language, doesn’t understand the intricacies of this foreign society, negotiate her freedom and the freedom of her vulnerable colleague from a prince who yields his power and demands absolute surrender?

Walk with Claire as she weaves her way through a kaleidoscope of catastrophic circumstances, learn about this antiquated society and discover why life is surreal in Saudi.
